The Basic Illusionist and Pay What You Want

So...The Basic Illusionist was always intended to be free.  And it is.  And it will remain so.  But this "Pay What You Want" thing that's taking off is intriguing.  I'm not adverse to collecting a little money for The Basic Illusionist if someone feels it's worth it -  I'd either buy more gaming material (grist for the mill), or get some art for another project.

RPGNow doesn't do publisher accounts for people looking to distribute one free product, so I'm not sure if I'd have to price it, and then change the price, or if I should just partner with someone with an established publisher account.

I'll have to think about this.

  1. If you put it up I will pay something for it.

I like this idea and I would like to see how it works.

    1. Thanks! I'm mulling it over - what I might do is pull together one or two super-short little things, and use those as the "not-free" products to make me a "legitimate" publisher.

  2. Hey Nathan - I grabbed it when you put it out for free, as I do for many things I end up perusing for ideas but usually don't end up using. While the Pay What You Want idea is interesting, I'm ultimately unable to spend much on gaming and can't say I'll pay for much of anything if I don't have to. That said, I will gladly offer you a beer on Friday. :-) It's worth at least that much!

    1. I know exactly what you mean. My game budget is usually $0. The intent isn't to guilty people into paying, it's more just curiosity. A number of people have said they'd be willing to pay even though it's free. And being on RPG now would be more exposure.

  3. Why not try?

I'd personally be more willing to pay cash for a hard copy. These days when I'm in front of a computer I'm usually working, so it's hard for me to juggle and browse gaming PDFs (or blog, write gaming material, etc.)

  4. Or you could just put a PayPal-attached email address up near the link for the Illusionist PDF with a little request for some scratch.

Hell, I can--and will--give you enough to buy a few new PDFs over at RPGNow.

    1. I thought about that to. What the heck, I'll set it up tomorrow.

  5. Hi, Nathan! Did you try the “pay what you want” approach for The Basic Illusionist? Well, there’s no harm in trying. You just have to prepare yourself and accept whatever the outcome is. Reading the other comments here, I can feel that they’re fine with the idea. If you’re still having second thoughts about it, you might want to check this recent BBC interview which discusses the new form of “pay what you want” system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzvNXI2pkGA&feature=youtu.be Hope this helps!
